Instant New York Times Bestseller!
New York Times bestselling author and pastor Steven Furtick shows readers how to find their God-given identity and to grow into the person God designed them to be all along.
Do you ever get a glimpse of yourself that is exactly who you want to be, but always seems just out of reach? The happier, kinder, less stressed, more courageous you? The ideal version of you isn't imaginary at all. It's actually the authentic you trying to break through. And it’s not a future version of yourself you have to chase. The true you may be new to you, but it’s not new to God. It's the you he knew all along.
In Do the New You, New York Times bestselling author and pastor Steven Furtick speaks directly to the challenge of living out your God-given identity and calling. He explores and unpacks six practical mindsets everyone can adopt to get from who you are today to where God is taking you. These six statements are truths you can speak over yourself any time and anywhere:
• I’m not stuck unless I stop.
• Christ is in me. I am enough.
• With God there's always a way and by faith I will find it.
• God is not against me, but he's in it with me, working through me, fighting for me.
• My joy is my job.
• God has given me everything I need for the season I’m in.
These simple, powerful, memorable phrases will shift your focus, feelings, and actions to align with God’s vision of you. God isn’t just calling you to do you. He’s calling you to do the new you—the unique and powerful person he created you to be.A Study Guide is also available for purchase.
A Spanish edition, ¡Renuévate!, is also available for purchase.
I have a thing for reading Christian living/self-help books. So you can imagine my delight when I was chosen to receive a copy of Do the New You as an advanced reader’s copy. Read on to see my thoughts on this new book from Pastor Steven Furtick.
For those who don’t know I’m a former member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints1Also known as an Ex-Mormon or Ex-Mo.. When I first made the decision to leave, I was “going it on my own”, not doing anything in regards to church services. I was just winging it doing a home Bible study that included reading from a reading plan, doing a Scripture writing plan, and reading a Sarah Young devotional book2Jesus Today at that time.. Then I decided to try online services for a couple of reasons. First, because we have one car for six people3Five people at that time. and we had two people going to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and two people going to Friendship Assembly of God. Second, I wasn’t quite ready at that point to try in-person services. I remembered a former friend of mine4I was the one in the wrong in the breakup of the friendship and despite multiple attempts to reach out and apologize, I have been blocked at every turn. had gone to Elevation Church, so I decided to see if they had their services online at all. They did, so I spent several weeks watching the services there.
At that point, they’d started promoting Pastor Steven’s newest book, Do the New You: 6 Mindsets to Become Who You Were Created to Be. I quickly pre-ordered the book, but then found that it was available to request on NetGalley. I wasn’t expecting to be approved, but I was. And I am so glad I was.
Pastor Steven keeps it real5He admitted to listening to Metallica on the way to church and has preached a sermon wearing a Guns N Roses t-shirt – a man after my own heart in that respect.. He gives examples from his own life, quotes from friends and acquaintances, and my favorite – he quotes from the Bible, complete with references to the Scriptures. He doesn’t dance around saying things that sound good just to fill out the book. Best of all, the mindsets make sense. Yes, they can be difficult to enact because human beings have this weird thing we do where we insist on tearing ourselves down instead of building ourselves up to do what we’re called to do. But they aren’t impossible – especially with God’s help.
For those who might be wondering, the six mindsets in Do the New You are:
- I’m not stuck unless I stop
- Christ is in me, I am enough
- With God there’s always a way, and by faith I will find it
- God is not against me, but He’s in it with me, working through me, fighting for me
- My joy is my job
- God has given me everything I need for the season I’m in
Note that these are not working on yourself without God’s help – these are working on yourself WITH God’s help. I’ve read so many books by pastors that are in the Christian Living and Christian Self-Help categories that give great tips, but forget that God needs to be part of the plan. Not so with Pastor Steven! He fully admits you’ll need God and that God has and will give you everything you need to be who He created you to be.
I loved this book so much and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to move themselves closer to God and closer to who they were created by God to be. You might not think you have what it takes to do the thing God has called you to do, but I’m telling you, you do and this book will help you on the way. This was a five-star read and I can’t wait to see what he writes next.
